On Saturday 6 November Louise Calverley and Mac went off to be guinea pigs at the Area 18 Training Day at Hartpury.
Our instructor was 4* event rider Rosie Thomas, and our session focussed on improving showjumping rhythm. There were 4 of us in the group, me from MHRC, and then 3 other people from Swindon RC, Cotswold Edge and the other club I can't remember. The horses were quite varied in terms of experience so we started with gridwork, and then progressed to a full course.
To start with we had around 8 fences which started just as canter poles, progressing to a full grid with x-poles, uprights, spreads and varying distances including bounces. Rosie gave some really useful advice and I was happy that the things she picked up on with Mac and I were things I was already aware of and working on! Mac was a superstar and didn't put a hoof wrong - for once it was nice to be on the receiving end of lots of positive comments!
I discovered that Mac loves applause, as every time the audience clapped he seemed to grow about a hand and puff out his chest! Show off.
The training day was a great idea and it's a shame more people didn't make it. I really hope the organisers run it again next year and hopefully as word gets around more people will support the event. Thanks to everyone involved for a great day!
