Doris has a tummy tuck!
Hi everyone,
Many thanks to all the members who have been asking about Doris.
She had severe colic and Three Counties Equine Hospital had to do an emergency operation to remove a lipoma the size of a large grapefruit and 10ft small intestine. When this failed I really didn't think there was any future for her, but she slowly improved after a second operation and 10 days in the excellent care of 3CEH. She has been back home for a month now and will be allowed out at Christmas, yippee. Hopefully we will be out riding again in February and maybe back in the jumping teams next year.

Louise & Mac play guinea pigs at the Area 18 training day
On Saturday 6 November Louise Calverley and Mac went off to be guinea pigs at the Area 18 Training Day at Hartpury.
Our instructor was 4* event rider Rosie Thomas, and our session focussed on improving showjumping rhythm. There were 4 of us in the group, me from MHRC, and then 3 other people from Swindon RC, Cotswold Edge and the other club I can't remember. The horses were quite varied in terms of experience so we started with gridwork, and then progressed to a full course.
To start with we had around 8 fences which started just as canter poles, progressing to a full grid with x-poles, uprights, spreads and varying distances including bounces. Rosie gave some really useful advice and I was happy that the things she picked up on with Mac and I were things I was already aware of and working on! Mac was a superstar and didn't put a hoof wrong - for once it was nice to be on the receiving end of lots of positive comments!
I discovered that Mac loves applause, as every time the audience clapped he seemed to grow about a hand and puff out his chest! Show off.
The training day was a great idea and it's a shame more people didn't make it. I really hope the organisers run it again next year and hopefully as word gets around more people will support the event. Thanks to everyone involved for a great day!

MHRC members' brilliant Broadway!
Two MHRC members did exceptionally well at Broadway BE Horse Trials at the weekend. Camilla Esling and Just Jake kept a cool head in the BE90 Regional Final, finishing 5th in their section on their dressage score of 35...AND QUALIFYING FOR THE 2011 BADMINTON GRASSROOTS CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Brilliant!
For anyone not familiar with the Grassroots Championships, the competition brings together winners from BE90 and BE100 regional qualifiers around the country to contest the overall championship, which is held just before the main 4* Badminton in May. The course is really like a smaller version of the main one! You can read more about it here
Well done Camilla - what an achievement in what has got to be the most exciting equestrian discipline...not that I'm biased!
Sue Peckham and Tims Choice also had a cracking day, notching up a speedy XC round to finish 10th in their BE90 section. Well done them!
Shame about the third member (me) picking Regional Final day to finally realise that Mac had been trying to tell me he's got a sore back since twisting over a huge ditch-hedge at Dauntsey 2 weeks previously :( So some physio for him and then, roll on March!

Steph 2nd at HOYS!
Steph Woolley and Kings Cruise were placed second in the Search for a Star Working Hunder class at the Horse of the Year Show on Thursday! A full report will follow I'm sure, and results are available here
Update from Steph: We were all thrilled to come second as it was so unexpected! Cruise was completely in his element whilst away, seeming really happy in the arena exercise sessions and relaxed enough to be lying down in his (very small!) stable at night. He behaved beautifully throughout and stood like a trojan whilst I attempted to get back on him from the ground in the class! Suffice to say it wasn't elegant and I got a round of applause when I eventually managed to get back in the saddle!

Good luck Steph at HOYS!

Club member Emma Mealing made the trip to Royal Windsor Horse show last weekend, after qualifiying for the Topscore earlier in the year. After a 2am start (that's commitment for you!) to get to Windsor for 6am, Emma and her pony Rod did really well to come 9th in the first round.
They didn't qualify for the Championships but a lovely day was had by all. Bet they slept well when they got home!

Help please!
As you know we can't run events without your help - we really need people to help run the Area SJ on Sunday 30 May.
We need writers to help the BSJA judges, tack checkers and ring stewards. If you can only spare a few hours we need people for the Style ring which will start at around 10am and finish around 2pm - for this we need a writer, tack checker and ring steward. The intermediate / open and novice rings start around 9.30 and finish around 4pm.
Refreshments will be provided throughout the day - yes we know cake goes a long way in bribing people!
We also need help for a couple of hours on Saturday 29 May to help set up. We'll start at 10am and with plenty of hands on deck it should only take a couple of hours.
Please contact Cindie if you can help cindiebunce@sky.com or 07810 178520
